박상호는 도시 공간을 인식하게 하는 본질적 요소에 대해 질문한다. 도시는 늘 우리를 둘러싸고 언제 어디서나 존재한다. 하지만 도시를 인식하는 것과
실제의 도시 간에는 차이가 있다. 왜냐하면 개인이 가진 도시의 기억과 고착된 이미지는 주관적이기 때문이다. 박상호는 이러한 도시의 모습이 내포한 가상적
측면, ‘만들어진 실제(재)’를 가시화한다. 작가는 ‘도시’라는 거대한 공간에 인식적 장치로 몇 개의 층을 설정하고 있다. 그 하나가 건물의 표면인 파사드이고,
다른 하나는 무대를 상상하게 하는 구조물과 기구 같은 것들이다. 그는 도시 풍경을 건물의 외관 중심으로 촬영하고, 파사드만 남긴 채 뒷면이 건축용 비계로
지탱되고 있는 모습을 그려낸다. 화면 속 건물은 물리적 부피감과 기능을 상실하고, 마치 영화 세트장에서 볼법한 구조물로 변환된다. 작품들은 일견 파편화된
구조물로 무대 속에 있었던 부분처럼 보이지만, 개별 유닛의 조형 요소들은 독자적으로 존재 가치를 지닌다. 우리는 인식에서 이미 익숙해져 버린 도시 풍경의
단면을 다시금 일깨워 볼 수 있다. 이 풍경은 우리가 사는 현대 도시의 전형적 이미지일지도 모른다. - 2020 부산비엔날레
PARK Sangho explores the elements which enable the recognition of urban space. City exists at any time and everywhere
as a surrounding of our contemporary environment. However, there lies a deviation between the act of recognizing city and
its actual reality, as memories and images, which art fixated, remains subjective to each individual. PARK reflects on this
imaginary aspect of the cityscape, the ‘made-up reality’. As a tool to perceive the massive space of ‘city’, the artist sets
multiple layers. One is the facade, the face of the building, and the other is the structures and tools which are reminiscent of
a theatre. On the photographs of the cityscapes, he would erase all but the facades of the buildings, and present an image
which the facade are supported by scaffolds. Then the buildings, devoid of physical volume and function, are transformed
into a structure often seen in movie sets. His works appear ad fragmented structures from the theatre, however the
formative elements of each unit holds its own presence of being. The standpoint of PARK allows viewers to re-examine the
familiar cityscape. Perhaps the scenery we recognize through PARK’s work is out typical image of a contemporary city.

박상호에게 도시는 표피적, 물리적, 심리적, 구조적인 관점으로 해석이 가능한 어떤 공간이다. 다양한 관점으로 도시를 파악하는 작가가 궁극적으로 천착하는
지점은 도시 공간을 인식하게 하는 본질적 요소에 대한 질문이다. 도시는 늘 우리를 둘러싸고 언제 어디서나 존재하므로 우리가 ‘실제(재)’라고 지각하는 그것의
모습은 공통된 기호를 가지는 외관으로 드러나기 마련이다. 하지만 도시를 인식하는 것과 실제 그것 사이에는 편차가 존재하는데, 그 이유는 개인이 가진 도시의
기억과 그를 바탕으로 고착화된 이미지는 주관적 양상으로 남아있기 때문이다. 이러한 도시의 모습이 내포한 가상적 측면, ‘만들어진 실제(재)'를 가시화시킨다.
이를 위해 작가는 ‘도시'라는 거대한 공간에 인식적 장치로 몇 개의 층(layers)을 설정한다. 작가가 작품에서 견지하는 시점을 통해 우리는 인식에서 이미
익숙해져 버린 도시 풍경의 단면을 다시금 일깨울 수 있다. 박상호의 작품에 드러나는 풍경은 우리가 사는 현대 도시의 전형적 모습인지도 모른다.

Park Sang-ho interprets the city as a space that can be understood from superficial, physical, psychological, and
structural perspectives. The artist, who approaches the city from various viewpoints, ultimately delves into the question
of the essential elements that enable us to perceive urban space. Since the city constantly surrounds us and exists
everywhere at all times, what we perceive as "reality" inevitably manifests through an exterior with shared symbols.
However, there is a discrepancy between our perception of the city and its actual existence, because individual memories of
the city and the images solidified through them remain in a subjective state. He visualizes this virtual aspect inherent in
the city's appearance, this "constructed reality." To this end, the artist establishes several layers as perceptual devices
within the massive space called "the city." Through the perspective the artist maintains in his work, we can reawaken
cross-sections of urban landscapes that have already become familiar in our perception. The landscapes revealed in
Park Sang-ho's works may well be the archetypal image of the modern city in which we live.
